Today Is My 70th Birthday

So, this is 70. Like most folks turning 70, I never expected I would be here. I can't believe how fast life goes by. Seventy years, it literally went by in a blink.

I am celebrating my 70th birthday without a party, I honored the occasion with a scenic day trip to NYC, by focusing on an intimate, quiet dining experience with myself in New York doing things that I truly enjoy.

Later today, I would be engaging in my favorite hobby at the garage with the motorcycles. To me, the little things are the ones that matter, like spending the afternoon changing oil and filter on my motorcycle and making sure the Ninja is ready for the upcoming riding season. I also went out on a shopping spree for colorful and vibrant clothing; the color clothing that enhance my personal style.

My 70th birthday is a milestone worthy of a quiet celebration, focusing on gratitude, family and my small circle of friends. This coming week I would be reflecting on 70 years of life and focusing on what truly matters. Happy birthday to me. 😀

Today Is A Great Day, It's My Birthday

What a difference a day makes. Just the other day I was talking about my retirement, (12 months, 1 hours, 18 minutes, 50 seconds until I retire). Now I'm worried whether this time next week I would still have a job. Yesterday, my employer announced another round of temporary furloughs. A move that will affect healthcare services to our community. Looking on the bright side, I still have a job.

For my 64th birthday, I thought I would be spending my special day in a weekend mini vacation getaway somewhere; attending a Phillies game at Citizens Park, in Brooklyn Bridge Park taking pictures of the New York City's skyline, spending time with a small group of close friends.

As luck would have it, thanks to the Coronavirus, this morning I ended up sitting in front of the computer talking with family and friends over the phone. The main conversation revolved around what to do on my first week of retirement. I had a friend ask me if I was scared. I answered that I am frightened, and excited at the same time. There is an inspirational quote that says, "As you embark on the exciting journey into retirement, you will experience a transition that will be both thrilling and terrifying.” Only time will tell.

A co-worker asked me why I took the day off.

Today is my birthday, and I know the world doesn't stop turning just because it's my birthday, I replied. Besides, the clinic is closed on Christopher Columbus, George Washington and Martin Luther Kings birthdays, I reminded her. It is only fair to celebrate that I am still alive the day I was born.

Who among us hasn't needed a break from work? Don't get me wrong, I am not a workaholic, but I am always reminded by my supervisor how much unused paid vacation I'll have accumulated.

I return to work next Monday. I thought about running errands, hanging out with friends, riding my motorcycle on a trip, or spending the day in New York. Instead, I spent the whole day sleeping.

On the day I was born, I am writing a blog post about how I decided to spend my entire birthday in bed with my laptop, by myself, with enough snacks and food to sustain me the day.
